PRESS RELEASE
79th art auction on June 22 & 23, 2010
Classic Modernism, Contemporary Art and Jugendstil
On June 22 the auction house im Kinsky will auction the best of classic modernism and contemporary art, which is currently on offer on the market. 135 high quality oeuvres of Jugendstil will be on offer on June 23. All in all, the estimated price adds up to between 4 and 8 Million Euros.
CLASSIC MODERNISM
The section of classic modernism stands out with a famous, but extremely rare “Streichquartette” by Max Oppenheimer (€ 100.000 – 180.000). After Oppenheimer’s return to Vienna in 1908, he joined the circle of artists around Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. In particular Kokoschka’s portraits focusing on psychological aspects impressed him deeply. In the previous year im Kinsky realized 528.000 Euros for “Geißelung”, which is the artist’s record price.
Furthermore, “Flusslandschaft” (€ 70.000 – 120.000) by Carl Moll will also be of great interest to collectors and art lovers. In 1897 Moll was one of the cofounders of the Secession, for which he organised startling exhibitions. Despite his self-doubt, he painted wonderful squared architecture and landscapes after the turn of the century, which made him one of the most desired artists of the Jugendstil.
A female portrait by Anton Faistauer (€ 50.000 – 100.000) is among the most attractive paintings. Faistauer is one of the few artists who were already famous in their lifetime. He received prizes and important commissions, was awarded an honorary title of professor, made portraits of governors and archbishops – and beautiful women.
Women also play an important role in Alexander Rothaug’s artistic life. His “Entführung” (€ 35.000 – 70.000) is full of pathos, drama and cautious sensuality. Wilhlem Thönys “Haus in Sanary sur Mer”
(€ 40.000 – 70.000) is also sensual, but in a very different way. His paintings, which were made in the Cote d’Azur, are among the best of the period between the world wars.
Highlights of the classic modernism section are two oeuvres by Pierre-August Renoir: The oil painting “Personen im Park” (€ 150.000 – 250.000), which is included in the archives of Bernheim-Jeune as an original, and “Paysage d’automne avec une mare” (€ 120.000 – 200.000).
CONTEMORARY ART
While living in exile in Switzerland, Fritz Wotruba created wonderful female figures, which were modelled from Jurassic limestone. The auction house im Kinsky has two on offer: “Große Stehende” from 1942 and “Große weibliche Figur” from 1944. The estimated price for these life-sized figures lies between € 80.000 and 150.000 each.
The contemporary art also offers some outstanding oeuvres of the Fantastic Realism: In particular a 110 x 180 cm sized painting from the year 1988 by Wolfgang Hutter. It reveals the entire mastery of this artist.
Rudolf Hausner’s “Adam real und ideal” (€ 35.000 – 60.000) once again proves his constant dealing with himself. The technique of the old masters, which impresses us so much today, has nevertheless the price of only relatively few paintings. This is also the case with Wolfgang Herzig, whose “Copula 1” (€ 20.000 – 30.000) will be on offer. The notoriously slow artist (he doesn’t make more than five, six paintings a year) is a fetishist of material – but in the meantime he has many collectors, who are enthused by all his oeuvres. Another extraordinarily scrupulous artist is Eduard Angeli. His “Triptychon” (€ 25.000 – 40.000), with its extremely reduced fields of colour, makes him a unique figure of the Austrian artistic community.
A montage of relics by Hermann Nitsch (€ 25.000 – 40.000) will be auctioned. Nitsch is the only Austrian artist who is permanently shown in two “own” museums in Neapel and Mistelbach.
His oeuvre is based on a work of relics from the 80th auction (1984), which he reworked in 2007. Austria’s most famous informal painter, Hans Staudacher, shows a very early and therefore exciting oeuvre (1958, € 15.000 – 25.000). Otto Mühl is internationally more and more demanded. His “Mutter mit Kind nach Picasso” (€ 25.000 – 45.000) makes him a pioneer of the Wild Style of the early 1980s.
JUGENDSTIL
The auctioning of 135 high quality oeuvres of the Wiener Werkstätte and of the manufactures Lötz and Hagenauer starts on June 23 at 5 p.m. A brooch with diamonds by Josef Hoffmann (€ 70.000 – 150.000) and a set of six wine glasses by Otto Prutscher
(€ 40.000 – 80.000) are among the highlights of this auction. A vase by Franz Hofstötter - manufacture Lötz - was made for the world exhibition in Paris in 1900 and is estimated at 15.000 – 25.000 Euros. A further masterpiece of this manufacture is a vase
(€ 18.000 – 30.000) made in 1902 with four decorative handles. Art lovers and collectors of Adolf Loos objects should be at im Kinsky on this day. A hanging lamp (€ 10.000 – 20.000) and a table with six legs
(€ 10.000 – 15.000) could find a new home on this occasion. On Wednesday, June 16 at 6.30 p.m. Dr. Ernst Ploil will hold a lecture at im Kinsky on the topic: “Was war vor der Wiener Werkstätte?”
