PRESS-RELEASE
1st & 2nd of December 2009In the December auction imKinsky offers high quality and a wide range of rare, unique and high-grade oeuvres of classic modernism, contemporary art and Jugendstilto art lovers and to those who yet want to become one. For this last auction of the year 570 especially exquisite pieces of art, with an estimated price of 4.2 to 6.8 Million Euros, could be acquired.
Classic Modernism
Herbert Boeckl’s intensive examination of the portrait of the Dominican Father Diego Hans Goetz led to this balanced composition of “Dominikaner” (€ 150.000 -250.000). Boeckl’s endeavour for a synthesis of expressionist and cubist picture elements, which here was achieved in a wonderful balance between body, space and colour, are features of his late work. A different mode of synthesis was developed by Wilhelm Thöny in his landscapes, which were made in France. “Gebirgslandschaft in Südfrankreich” (€ 30.000 – 60.000) is flooded with light and combines painted and graphic elements.
As a painter of women Albert von Keller was widely known. He chooses elements of symbolists so as to rediscover the elegant womankind of the founding period and Belle Epoque. “Hexenver-brennung” (€ 22.000 – 35.000) shows the sensual passion of his images of women.
Women are also the motif of three paintings by Gustav Klimt. “Dame im Pelz” is offered for € 20.000 - 30.000. Of international relevance is a drawing by Lyonel Feininger “Hafen II” (€ 12.000 – 20.000) from 1917. Ships engaged Feininger throughout his life and inspired his imagination. With suspense one will also be able to follow the auction of Alfons Walde’s “Nach der Messe” (€ 15.000 – 25.000) and Oskar Mulley’s “Berghof” (€ 7.000 – 12.000).
In addition further high-quality paintings such as by Josef Dobrowsky “Heuernte” (€ 25.000 – 40.000), by Victor Tischler “Damenporträt” (€ 25.000 – 50.000) or Alexander Rothaug’s “Meeresnixen” (€ 25.000 – 40.000) will tempt to bid.
Contemporary Art
The highlight of contemporary art will undoubtedly be Maria Lassnig’s “Spiegelbilder” (€ 150.000 – 250.000) from 1987. The own body, the own sensations are projected onto the painting. Through other perspectives things appear in a new context.
Wolfgang Hollegha, one of the most important abstract painters of Austria, is presented with another highlight. “Ohne Titel” (€ 40.000 – 70.000) was made in 2007 and is characterized by the gentle and light application of colour fields on a white background. Hollegha always starts from a real object, but then abstracts its impression completely.
“L’esclave mourant (after Michelangelo)” by Yves Klein is valued at € 35.000 – 50.000. Despite his short productive period of only eight years, Klein’s diversified repertoire astonishes time and again. With Klein one associates this captivating ultramarine, a hue, which he especially develop and also had patented. Also “La terre bleue” (€ 20.000 – 35.000) shines with this blue twice as brightly.
Whoever loves sculptures has the choice between Josef Pillhofers “Liegender Mann” (€ 30.000 – 40.000), Andreas Urteil’s “Kleiner Wächter” (€ 20.000 – 30.000), Wander Bertoni’s “Hermaphrodit” (€ 20.000 – 30.000)
1957 Rudolf Hausners first Adam-Bild was made, which varied again and again. “Adam Baumeister”
(€ 35.000 – 60.000) from 1979 appears in a clear, cool and mysterious way. Who is Adam? At which point will he be auctioned?
Desired are also Hermann Nitsch’s Schüttbilder, of which “Schüttbild mit Malhemd” is offered for € 40.000 – 70.000.
With twenty oeuvres the master of overpainting, Arnulf Rainer, is represented and can already be auctioned beginning at
€ 6.500.
Also international artists such as Damien Hirst “Ohne Titel”
(€ 15.000 – 25.000) can be acquired at imKinsky.
Jugendstil
On the 2nd of December we continue our December auction at 5 p.m. and immerse in the world of Jugendstil. Here, oeuvres of the Wiener Werkstätte, Wiener Keramik and Werkstätten Hagenauer as well as outstanding vases of the manufacture Lötz are in the limelight.
Josef Hoffmann und the Wiener Werkstätte are a must for every Jugendstil auction and are also this time numerously represented. The silver carafe “Essig-Öl-Karaffe”
(€ 70.000 – 120.000) made in 1909 is adorned with malachite and marked with WW. A centrepiece
(€ 90.000 – 150.000) of which only three pieces were produced, “Kaviarbehälter” (€ 20.000 – 40.000) with a set in opaline glass, of which only two further exemplars exist, or a set of inks € 10.000 -15.000, are only some of the exceptional objects by Josef Hoffmann in this auction.
Michael Powlony is also represented with several oeuvres. Yet, extremely rare is the offered “Putto mit Kranz” (€ 40.000 – 80.000). Completely in black and white it announces the winter, in contrast to “Putto mit Trauben” (€8.000 – 12.000), who still indulges in the grape harvest or “Putto mit Blumen” (€ 7.000 -15.000), who can barely grasp the brilliant display of flowers of spring.
Enthusiasm is certainly also ensured by “Tafelaufsatz” (€ 20.000 – 40.000) designed by Adolf Otto Holub. The formal structuring and the masterly usage of materials like silver, lapis lazuli and red semi-precious stones clearly show the influence of Josef Hoffmann, under whom Holub studied architecture.
The Hagenauer Werkstätten, existing up to the present moment, were since the 20’s the main representatives of the Viennese arts and crafts and are connected to the Wiener Werkstätte. Decorative elements, such as “Wildschwein” (€ 2.000 - 3.000), as well as basic commodities were produced. The two “Kerzenleuchter” (€ 9.000 – 12.000) appear seldom as a pair.
Rarely offered is also “Armband”
(€ 17.000 – 25.000), which was created, according to a concept by Carl Otto Czeschka, in the Wiener Werkstätte. Only three exemplars of it exist. One with citrine studded piece of jewellery was sold in New York for 30.000 Euros in 2003.
In addition the wide ranging offer of 215 objects of Jugendstil is remarkable. Dagobert Peche, Emile Gallé, Leopold Fortner, Kolo Moser, Josef Maria Olbrich and many others will fill every collector and art lover with enthusiasm.
