PRESS RELEASE
74th Art Auction on 23rd & 24th June 2009
From Schiele to Wotruba
On 23rd & 24th of June im Kinsky holds its last auction of the spring season. 430 works of Classical Modernism, Contemporary Art and Jugendstil with an estimated value of € 4.6 to 8 million indicate the high quality of the objects on offer.
CLASSIC MODERNISM
Egon Schiele's "Female nude with stockings", in gouache and pencil drawn in 1912 adorns the cover of the Modern Art auction catalogue. Estimated at € 100,000 – 140,000, the drawing that has been in private ownership for eighty years should prove to be a great success. A "Standing girl" by Schiele in chalk dated 1914 is also on offer; the estimated price here is a keen
€ 70,000 – 120,000.
International interest is bound to be focussed on a floral painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (€ 100,000 – 180,000) dated 1915. The artist was already living on the Cote d’Azur by this time and had developed his unmistakable free style.
In his typically sketchy although consummate manner, Anton Kolig produced a "Standing male nude" in 1924 (€ 120,000 – 180,000). From Anton Faistauer the "Portrait of the opera singer Lilly Schöne" dated 1927 is on offer (€ 50,000 – 100,000), and Wilhelm Thöny is represented at this auction by his sparkling "House in Sanary sur Mer" (€ 60,000 – 100,000). Additionally Oskar Laske celebrates the "Spring" (€ 90,000 – 120,000) in his non-imitable style. The "Three standing nudes" by Otto Rudolf Schatz is reminiscent of his "Mondfrauen", even if this later painting does not reveal the same strict New Objectivity
(€ 100,000 – 200,000).
For this gorgeous cityscape „An der Donau” (€ 70,000 – 110,000), Schatz uses vibrant and vigorous colours to convey the atmosphere of a summer day at the Arbeiterstrandbad in Vienna.
CONTEMPORARY ART
In 1967 Fritz Wotruba built a model of the church „Zur Heiligsten Dreifaltigkeit“ at the St. Georgenberg in Wien-Mauer, that was intended to be his artistic masterpiece. He said he wanted to "create something that shows, that poverty does not have to be ugly, that renouncement can take place in an environment that makes you happy, despite its overpowering simplicity." After years of quarrelling, the building was finally erected using 152 red concrete blocks in 1974. Light enters the building through simple panes of glass, which are integrated into the irregular gaps, producing overlapping beams of light. A model of the church in bronze is going to be auctioned at an estimated value of € 120,000 – 250,000.
"Zwiegespräch / Dialogue" by Friedensreich Hundertwasser
(€ 100,000 – 120,000) also promises to attract great interest. No other artist is in such international demand as Hundertwasser. Following the (austrian) record price at the last auction, it will be exciting to find out at which bid the hammer falls this time.
A record price is also expected from Arik Brauer's "In statu nascendi"
(€ 50.000 – 80.000). The 110 x 203 cm painting dated 1982 is one of the key masterpieces from this multi-talented artist.
In the Jugendstil section, a brooch by Josef Hoffmann (1910, Wiener Werkstätte, (€ 80,000 – 150,000) really shines out among the other exciting objects on offer. Collectors from all over the world are sure to turn their attention to Dagobert Peche's mirror manufactured by Franz Uhlig in 1922 for the Wiener Werkstätte. At € 20,000 – 40,000 there ought to be plenty of interest.
