PRESS RELEASE
68th Art Auction: 15 & 16 April 2008
Look! A Waldmüller!
"Der Guckkastenmann" by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller at im Kinsky

The highlight of the 68th auction is "Der Guckkastenmann" by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller: (€1,000,000 to 1,500,000). A new Waldmüller record is expected at im Kinsky for this breathtaking work, set to exceed the price achieved in 2004 for "Das Ende der Schulstunde" (€1,061,000).
It was genre painting that Waldmüller was most interested in and made him a highly regarded artist during his lifetime (1793 – 1865). With his works he wanted to present a story that reflected a slightly idealised version of reality rather than true-to-life scenes. Our "Guckkastenmann" is the third of four depictions on this theme painted by Waldmüller: the first in 1847, two more in 1850 and the fourth in 1865. The first work went to the House of Esterházy, the second was burned in 1945.

Attention will also be focussed in this auction on "Große Stillleben mit Gartenblumen" by Olga Wisinger-Florian (€70,000 – 140,000) and "Kirsch- und Pfirsichblüte mit dem Schloss Znaim im Hintergrund" by Theodor von Hörmann (€80,000 – 160,000).
A favourite amongst the old masters is a representation of Christ in "Testa di redentore", attributed to the Italian artist Antonio Allegri – better known as Correggio (€100,000 – 150,000). Correggio is one of the most significant Renaissance artists and had a lasting influence on Italian painting.

An impressive work that stands out from several delights by contemporary artists is an enamel by the artist Giselbert Hoke, "Tag und Nachtflug" (€35,000 – 50,000). This large-scale work consists of 55 copper plate squares. A model by Bruno Gironcoli, (€25,000 – 30,000) and a painted long-playing record by Gerhard Richter (€15,000 – 25,000) deserve special attention for their originality alone. Spray and graffiti fans should have a look at a work by the anonymous artist Banksy (€10,000 – 20,000).

A French tapestry from the 18th century – woven from the finest wool and silk – shows a delightful park landscape with animals. This extraordinarily well-kept work originates from the Baptiste Plantez workshop (€25,000 – 32,000). A Gothic Pietà (€15,000 – 25,000) and a Gothic Anna Selbdritt (€12,000 – 25,000) are not the only sculptures up for sale at the auction on the 15th and 16th of April. All in all, around 500 pictures and antiques with a value totalling between four and six million euros will be going under the hammer.
