63rd auction: 17th & 18th April 2007, 4 p.m.

Im Kinsky is broadening its scope to include Orientalia. Following the Old Masters and 19th century paintings of the first day of the auction, Orientalia will be the crowning highlight of the second day, immediately after the antiques.

In a superbly executed oil sketch (pre 1780), Johann Martin Schmidt takes the Easter theme of the Crucifixion (€35,000 – €50,000) as his motif. Along with Franz Anton Maulbertsch, Kremser Schmidt is the most important baroque painter of the second half of the 18th century in Austria. He skilfully imbues the painting with movement by using upward diagonals, thereby evoking the coming redemption through Christ's resurrection.

A wide path invites us to take a stroll in Olga Wisinger-Florian's enchanting Rosengarten an der Côte d’Azur (€80,000 – €140,000). Impressionistic brush-strokes and coloured shadows lure us into an idyll that is so typical of this landscape artist.

The inquisitiveness of an era of cabinets of art and curiosities resulted in a fantastic aestheticisation of timepieces in 17th century Augsburg. Johann Ott Halaicher's Räderuhr mit Hund (€35,000 – €70,000), a wheel clock with a dog that every now and again moves its eyes and mouth, is a multifaceted example of the creative diversity found among Augsburg clocks.

The top lot, When Women Travel, is valued at between €500,000 – €900,000. In 1944 Fu Baoshi, one of the most outstanding contemporary Chinese painters, put the poem of the same name by the Tang poet Du Fu into the form of painted poetry. On a horizontal scroll reading from right to left Baoshi expounds on his ideas of beauty by rhythmically portraying with great sensitivity elegant figures and sweeping washed landscapes with dry textural shades.
